Oil be seeing you

On the radio this morning it mentioned an energy-saving scheme where consumers are asked to reduce their electricity consumption for a set period in return for cash. A base-line is established over the previous 10 days for the time of day in question.

We signed up for that although our “rewards” so far have been in pennies rather than in pounds. Mind you, one motive for us is to see how well we would be prepared in the event of an actual power cut. The results have been encouraging but mixed.

For example, having an hour’s kip listening to a wind-up radio instead of watching TV is quite easy; or going for a walk or using the lap top on its battery instead of the mains. Playing cards by candle light is do-able also. The CO2 from the candles might be an issue unless they’re pure beeswax, perhaps.

However, the gas heating we left on (which has an electric pump) and turning the wi-fi off and on again is a bit of a faff so it is not the complete power-cut experience.

At least we have made an attempt to be prepared like the wise virgins mentioned in Matthew chapter 25. Anyone reading today’s chapter might just notice a bit of an irony here. They are commended for having enough spare oil and so were prepared when the bridegroom turned up late. I thought we were supposed to be reducing our use of oil? I know, it’s a different kind of oil; it’s just that at first glance I thought it ironic.

I agree with Holtham’s point that the stories in Matthew chapter 25 “call us to live with urgency and creativity rather than just coast along”. However, the handle on my wind-up radio has broken again and may not be repairable this time and tonight’s challenge is two hour’s. I don’t think we’ll manage the whole of it this time.

Keep us, O Lord, while we tarry on this earth,
in a serious seeking after you,
and in an affectionate walking with you,
every day of our lives;
that when you come,
we may be found not hiding our talent,
nor serving the flesh,
nor yet asleep with our lamp unfurnished,
but waiting and longing for our Lord,
our glorious God for ever. Amen.
